You might remember Ted Haggard, a former evangelical preacher who last year was outed as having homosexual sex with a male prostitute. He entered treatment and was discharged saying he was “completely heterosexual”. News about his has resurfaced as his new documentary is currently airing repeatedly on HBO – “The trials of Ted Haggard.”

In his interviews, he states that he believes his sexuality is “complicated” and that he wants to stay married to his wife and does not see himself as gay. He admits to having same-sex attractions but believes he is heterosexual.

Nobody knows the truth about Haggard but Haggard himself!

I don’t know Haggard personally, but I can see how his sexuality might be complicated and that he might not be gay at all .Hundreds of men like Haggard who are not gay and engage in same sex behaviors.
People have a hard time with men who have sex with men and are still
heterosexual.
Why?

Here are just a few reasons people have difficulty with Ted Haggard which I totally understand:

1. Politically

Using the false belief that gays can change stops people from being willing to grant rights and freedoms to gays and lesbians. Lesbians and gays have fought hard to teach that one’s sexual orientation and behaviors cannot be changed.

Politically laws against GLBT use the concept of “you’re making a choice” to block obtaining freedoms like getting legally married, keeping a job and not being a risk of being fired just because you’re gay as well as keeping your house and not being kicked out simply for being gay-all of which can happen still in 2009 in most places around the country.

My problem with all of this media attention around Haggard is the absence of scholarly lesbians and gays and spokesmen who are not given time to talk about these issues. If this were an African-American issue, the media would bring on Black scholars and writers to address the political consequences of what is happening around Haggard’s story.

2. The Bible.

Haggard has a history of as a preacher, for condemning gays and urging them to change.

Haggard still feels the Bible is not okay with homosexuality as he said on Larry King live.

But Haggard and others who interpret the Bible about homosexuality are wrong.

Scholar Rabbi Chaim Rapoport wrote a book called, Judaism and Homosexuality: An Authentic Orthodox View. In this book it is written that, “the Torah forbids homosexual activity as such: that much is clear from the testimony of both biblical and post-biblical literature. It does not condemn a homosexual disposition, because the Torah does not speak about what we are, but about what we do”.

Rabbi Rapoport position is clear in his book that the bible only talks of homosexual behavior, not of a gay identity or homosexual disposition. It never addresses those men and women who are oriented solely to a same sex attraction. He argues that while the Bible is against performing homosexual acts it never takes into account that one could be gay and lesbian and therefore expressing their true nature. Given this the Bible, from a contemporary point of view, does not address lesbians and gays.

While Rabbi Rapoport writes that the Torah forbids homosexual activity, he goes onto say that “there does not seem to be, however, any reference in Torah literature to the phenomenon of a ‘homosexual orientation’….”

Given this one cannot use the bible against homosexuality if there was not any room for it to be an identity which, today, we know it is.

For Haggard and men like him, it may not be his identity and so for him, his interpretation of the Bible might be useful. It is not useful for those who are GLBT’s.

3. Bisexuality

Why can’t Bisexuality be what is happening for Haggard? Some men like Haggard choose to self-identify as Bisexual because they are sexually attracted to both men and women. Bisexuals will tell you that they are often emotionally more attracted to one gender over another. For others they are equally attracted sexually and romantically to both.

This is a self-identifying term and if he chooses not to label himself in this way then he has that right. However, as a media figure he has the obligation to ensure that he is not speaking for bisexuals as well as lesbians and gays.

4. Gay Identity

For lesbians and gays, staying closeted was fraught with lying to themselves that they were essentially straight, with simply a “kinky” side or that their sexual interests were just that-sexual-and not about their identity. They now have great remorse over the lost years when they could have lived as openly gay men. The trauma of staying closeted was so painful that it strikes a nerve to learn that it’s possible to go through all that and still be straight.

I understand their strong reactions: The trauma of suppressing their identity is so profound that watching someone like Haggard remind them of their horrors they experienced while being closeted and of all the deprogramming it took them to understand they were truly gay.

We must make room for men and women like Haggard. Whether he is hiding, lying or telling the truth, there needs to be a place for men like him

What there is no place for is his anti-gay rhetoric that lesbians and gays can change, that the bible is against homosexuality and teaching young gays and lesbians that same-sex attractions are bad and wrong. They might be for the Haggard’s of the world, but to those who are truly gay and lesbian they are not!

Haggard’s story need not be about attacking him, attacking GLBT’s or using this as reasons to hate, discriminate and judge. That is what the Nazi’s were all about wasn’t it?

This needs to be about understanding and being curious about how complicated sexual behavior and identity can be!

Nearly 10% of Self-Proclaimed ‘Straight’ Men Only Have Sex With Men

Nearly one in 10 men who say they’re straight have sex only with other men, a New York City survey finds. And 70% of those straight-identified men having sex with men are married. In fact, 10% of all married men in this survey report same-sex behavior during the past year.
This means safe-sex messages aimed at straight and gay men are likely missing this important subgroup, suggest Preeti Pathela, DrPH, New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, and colleagues.
“To reduce the burden of sexually transmitted diseases and HIV infection among men who have sex with men, it is of utmost importance for [health care] providers to take a sexual history that ascertains the sex of a partner,” Pathela and colleagues report. “Asking about a patient’s sexual identity will not adequately assess his risk.”
Straight Men Who Have Sex With Men
In 2003, Pathela’s team performed telephone interviews with nearly 4,200 New York City men. They conducted the interviews in English, Spanish, Chinese, and Russian; a translation service helped with interviews in Greek, Korean, Yiddish, Polish, and Haitian Creole.
In nearly every study of sexual behavior, the percentage of men who report sex with men is higher than the percentage of men who report being gay.
So Pathela and colleagues first asked the men if they were bisexual, gay, or straight. Then they asked about specific sexual behaviors.
Some of the findings:
• Straight-identified men who have sex with men report fewer sex partners than gay men.
• Straight-identified men who have sex with men report fewer STDs in the past year than gay men.
• Straight-identified men who have sex with men are less likely than gay men to report using a condom during their last sexual encounter.
• Straight-identified men who have sex with men are more likely to be foreign born than gay men.
Also, a man who says he is straight but is having sex with other men is more likely to be married than a straight man who has sex with women, according to the survey. Only 54% of the men who say they’re straight and have sex with women are married, compared with the 70% marriage rate among the men who say they’re straight but have sex with men.
Pathela and colleagues note that because they report fewer STDs and fewer sex partners than gay men, straight-identified men who have sex with men may think they are at lower risk of HIV and STDs. This isn’t necessarily so.
The men with whom these straight-identified men have sex may themselves have multiple sex partners and elevated STD and HIV risk. The low rate of condom use makes the straight-identified men vulnerable.
“Prevention messages should focus on the activities that pose risk — for example, unprotected receptive anal sex — and should not be framed to appeal solely to gay-identified men,” Pathela and colleagues suggest.

Sieht der Papst nicht fantastisch aus? Was er im Kopf hat ist leider nicht so schön – im Gegenteil.

Unter diesen Papst geht die Kirche nach rechts und hinter die Kirchen-Öffnung des II. Vaticanum zurück. Wichtige Österreichische Bischöfe gehen mit Benedikt, nicht nur aus Papsttreue, sondern aus Überzeugung. Nicht die breite, weltoffene Volkskirche ist ihr Ziel, sondern eine kleine Schar hundertprozentiger konservativen Katholiken.

Der neue Linzer Weihbischof glaubt an Behandlung von Homosexualität In einem “Profil”-Interview tritt Wagner für eine Behandlung Homosexueller ein. Auf die Frage, ob Homosexualität heilbar sei und Homosexuelle behandelt werden sollten, antwortete er: “Dafür gibt es genügend Beispiele, nur davon spricht man nicht.”

Leitende Brüder der konservativen Piusbruderschaft halten daran fest, dass die Juden kollektiv schuld am “Gottesmord”, der Kreuzigung Jesu Christi, sind – ein zentrales Motiv des Antisemitismus. Indem Papst Benedikt XVI. die Piusbrüder zurück in den Schoß der katholischen Kirche aufnahm, geriet er selbst unter Antisemitismusverdacht.

Die Bedeutung der beiden Entscheidungen ist höchst unterschiedlich. Die Gedankenwelt dahinter aber ist die gleiche, wenn Papst Benedikt die exkommunizierten erzreaktionären Pius-Brüder wieder in die Kirche aufnimmt und der Linzer Diözese einen eher obskuren Weihbischof aufzwingt.

Viel Rauch kommt vom Vatikan und auch viel heisse Luft

Wie kann es sein, dass der Vatikan erklärt, nichts von den Äußerungen des notorischen Holocaust-Leugners Richard Williamson gewusst zu haben? Wie kann es sein, dass trotz zahlreicher Beteuerungen, die katholische Kirche habe für Antisemiten keinen Platz.  Er hatte in einem TV-Interview den Holocaust und die Existenz von Gaskammern geleugnet.  Das ist absurd und widerlich, eine Beleidigung für jeden, der den Holocaust überlebt hat, oder Freunde und Familie verloren hat, und sich nun anhören muss, die “Gaskammern” hätten der Desinfektion gedient. Aber es ist auch eine Idiotie, wie die Überzeugung, die Erde sei eine Scheibe, die noch weiter verbreitet ist als die, der Holocaust sei eine Erfindung. Wieso wird die barmherzige Hand des Oberhirten immer nur in eine Richtung ausgestreckt? Der Skandal um Bischof Williamson und die Seinen hat diesen Papst entzaubert.

Der ultrakonservative Kurs des Papstes ist empörend. Die Rehabilitierung der erzreaktionären Pius-Bruderschaft und die Ernennung des Hardliners Gerhard Maria Wagner zum Linzer Weihbischof stürzten die katholische Kirche in ihre schlimmste Krise seit der Affäre Groer. Droht sogar eine Spaltung?

Auf Plattformen wie kreuz.net oder gloria.tv informieren heute konservative Laiengruppierungen regelmäßig über „Abweichungen“ vom rechten Glauben. kreuz.net behauptet, das Bistum Linz sei „durch jahrelange altliberale Misswirtschaft in eine beispiellose Krise geführt“ worden.

Eine zentrale Rolle bei der Vernaderung liberaler Kirchenleute wird dem „Linzer Priesterkreis“ zugeschrieben, dem auch Pfarrer Wagner angehört. Einer der Gründer der jährlichen Sommerakademie des Priesterkreises in Aigen im Mühlviertel ist der frühere St. Pöltener Bischof Krenn. Auch Joseph Ratzinger hatte dort vor seiner Papstwahl Vorträge gehalten.

„Was dort alles gesagt wurde, ist abenteuerlich“, analysiert der Wiener Theologieprofessor Paul Zulehner aufgrund von ihm zugespielten Tonbandaufnahmen. Der Augsburger Theologe Anton Ziegenaus erklärt dort etwa: „Ein Gott, der immer nur vergeben und lieben darf, verliert jede männliche Persönlichkeitsstruktur.“

Zu den Besuchern der Sommerakademie gehört auch Albert Engelmann, Herausgeber der erzkatholischen Zeitung „Der 13.“. Nun wolle er wieder den Kirchenbeitrag zahlen, gab er auf seiner Homepage bekannt. Der Obmann des Priesterkreises, Josef Bauer, Pfarrer von Hohenzell, erwartet nun, dass unter Weihbischof Wagner in der Diözese „wieder der Gnadenstrom der Gesamtkirche fließt, statt sie in das Rinnsaal der Nationalkirche abgleiten zu lassen“.

Sieht dieser Mann nicht fantastisch aus? Was er im Kopf hat ist leider nicht so schön – im Gegenteil.

Mitglieder im Jahr. Nur noch 14 Prozent besuchen regelmäßig Gottesdienste. Mit 5,6 Millionen Mitgliedern ist die katholische Kirche aber immer noch die mit Abstand größte Religionsgemeinschaft im Land (rund 360.000 sind Muslime, 328.000 evangelisch).

Forderungen nach weiterer Öffnung und Reform der Kirche werden als Gefahr angesehen, die Aussöhnung mit Reaktionären und die gezielte Förderung von Erzkonservativen sind die Zukunft. Diese Entwicklung ist gewiss allein Sache der Kirche. Im Zuge der letzten Entwicklungen sollte man den Papst einmal ernsthaft fragen ob er für oder gegen Hexenverbrennungen ist.

Der Geheimorden Opus Dei gilt fortschrittlichen Mitgliedern der katholischen Kirche als fundamentalistische Sekte, als Promotor eines reaktionär-verknöcherten Christentums, dem die ganze Welt ein Gräuel ist, soweit sie sich nicht dem dogmatischen Wahrheitsanspruch der Kirche unterwirft. Die Heiligsprechung des Gründers Josemaría Escrivá ist in erster Linie ein Dankeschön des konservativen Polen Wojtyla an Opus Dei. Der sieht in dem Verein eine treue Garde des Papstes. Das Opus Dei beschränkt sich darauf, den Machtanspruch der Institution zu konservieren.

Wie kann so ein gut aussehender Mann so schlechten Einfluss auf die Welt haben

Die besondere Gefahr, die von dieser Eliteorganisation ausgeht, liegt in seiner weltweit ausgeklügelten konspirativen Tätigkeit in allen Lebensbereichen einer Gesellschaft. Seine Kraken- und Polypenarme dringen im Verborgenen in alle Bereiche der Gesellschaft.

Opus Dei  operiert nicht so sehr aus christlicher Nächstenliebe, sie orientieren sich vielmehr am selbstgestellten Auftrag, die weltliche Gesellschaft, wo immer sich eine Möglichkeit bietet, im Sinne einer konservativkatholischen Ideologie zu durchdringen – im Regelfall so, dass niemand es merkt. Die Mitglieder des Opus Dei geben sich meist nicht zu erkennen – in Spanien wird der Geheimbund deshalb auch die “heilige Mafia” genannt.
